What is ownable on the social web? Diplo, theft and content

Super-producer and DJ Diplo coins the term ‘gifgate’ as he is accused of copyright for using an animated GIF in his Snapchat video. The said GIF was used as a background for a preview of Missy Elliott’s remix of his co-produced track ‘Take U There’.

The author of the GIF, Rebecca Monk claims there was no credit for it’s use, which raises the question, is this a copyright issue or not?

I only have to open my Twitter and scroll for a few seconds to find an image, quote or link that isn’t owned by it’s author….

paper-jay-z

PAPER magazine do not own this article’s content or the image of Jay-Z.

zig-quote

Zig Ziglar doesn’t own the rights to the image here.

There is definitely a bigger conversation here, more than a ‘short’. But as a final thought…

Social media is definitely changing content ownership.
